Emancipation Parade 2015

Emancipation Parade

Saturday’s festivities begin with the Juneteenth Parade. More than twenty organizations (100 participants) are scheduled to participate. The parade will feature American History themed floats, marching bands, drill teams, car/motorcycle clubs, fraternities, sororities, the Buffalo Soldiers and President Abraham Lincoln has been spotted a time or two.

The parade component represents when the enslaved paraded around the plantations in celebration after hearing of their freedom. The fashion show represents the former enslaved taking their former en-slavers clothes and parading around in them in celebration of being freed. As part of the Juneteenth celebration they played team sports, some say baseball like sports or other ball games. Historically there were always discussions by the group regarding current issues that affected them.
